I quite like it. Now all we’ve gotta do is wait for the next Frontier, and we can finally have that Chevrolet, Ford, Honda, Nissan and Toyota showdown.

I’m really excited about the fact that all trims get the 2.3 ecoboost 10-speed combo.

Ford could’ve done a GM and only offered base models with a 2.5 boat anchor, but they didn’t!

See kids, this is why we can’t have nice things. If you ask for things but then not buy them, the manufacturer is more inclined to make generic cars that they know they’ll sell a ton of.

I don’t mind the old Frontier sticking around. It’s not massive, & it’s not overly complicated.

Consider me in the minority that thinks the perfect sized Ranger was the previous one they sold in the US, not this new Hilux/Taco sized guy.

We need a new Tacoma too, the current one doesn’t show it, but it needs a complete overhaul inside and out.

I know some people who enjoy complaining about the fact that the new minitruck crowd is too big, so hopefully this will calm them down a bit.

I kinda like this thing, but I’m disappointed in what we’re getting in the way of engines. Hopefully a diesel is coming.

No one buys single cabs in comparison to 4 door vehicles. That’s why Toyota dropped it.

in its last year of existence, I would put money on the bet that almost all of the north american single cab Rangers were white shortbeds with 4 cylinders, vinyl flooring, and shortly had the decals of a parts jobber, exterminator, or cable company on the doors. Zero profit fleet queens.

as I’ve pointed out in numerous past threads, the looks are deceiving. it admittedly is bulkier like every modern vehicle, but dimensionally it’s not way out of whack from the last gen PN150. I have a 2011 Ranger Sport 4x4 Supercab, and I’ve had mine side by side with a 2016 P375 Ranger. The new one was a couple of inches longer, about the same width, and a good bit (8 inches or so) taller. Plus, the bed sides and door sills are higher, and the P375 offers a double cab (crew cab) which the PN150 never did. Just so I can show I’m not blowing smoke (parked out in front of my place)

:

Kinja'd!!!

Kinja'd!!!

The additional length is largely due to the need to fit a 5 cylinder in the new one, and the crew cab.

I personally would’ve liked to have seen a simpler engine more suited to small work truck duty, but then nobody’s buying these to use as work trucks - the Transit Connect has almost certainly taken over 90+% of the market for work truck Rangers, and it has the NA 2.5.

Very, very true. I would argue that truck was behind the time when it was released even though. Nissan has never been particularly good at being ahead except the Juke. I do like those.

I saw via the press release that there will be a similar blue to what my old Ranger had, and I want it. Anyone know if they’re going to make a single cab, or just an extended cab? I don’t want a 4-door.

Umm, the 2.3 Ecoboost isn’t any more complex than a lot of modern V6's. It just has a turbo, an old technology. This engine is pretty perfect for a small truck. Diesel like torque, but with horsepower.

All I know is that I can’t be the only one who has absolutely no use for a back seat in a truck, but I do have use for an 8-foot bed.

If I were a contractor sure (actually I’d probably have a van for tools, truck for materials), but as a homeowner I’m just running to and from the store, maybe towing something now and then.

Kinja'd!!! bhtooefr > Jordan and the Slowrunner, Boomer Intensifies
01/14/2018 at 13:19

Kinja'd!!!0

Note that I referenced the NA 2.5 - the EcoBoost 2.3 is clearly more complex (and has more potential for issues) than that motor.

And, just because turbos are old tech doesn’t mean that they’re always reliable tech.

For that matter, what about efficiency? My guess is that this thing will be fine if you stay out of the boost, but if you actually work it, it’ll get into the boost and WHARRGARBL the fuel... but that gets into my point that people won’t work it, and the Transit Connect is the actual work truck.

You could get a 7' regular cab, though - the design goal for the Ranger was that a 4'x8' sheet of plywood could fit on the wheel wells with the tailgate down, without hanging past the tailgate IIRC.

I wonder how many people actually bought that, though - the fleet specials were all 6' bed, after all, and the regular cabs were incredibly cramped (especially before 1998, but even then), so most of the non-fleet ones I see are extended cab, and therefore are also 6' bed. (Realistically, the extended cab isn’t for the back seat, it’s for front seat legroom and recline room, and lockable storage.)

As far as bed lengths on the ROW (using UK, but it should all be the same) Ranger...

Regular cab: 2317 mm/91.2"

Super Cab: 1847 mm/72.7"

Double Cab: 1549 mm/61.0"

To compare to the available lengths on the 2009 US Ranger (the last year that long-bed regular cab was available):

Regular cab 7' bed: 84.6"/2149 mm

Regular/SuperCab 6' bed: 72.7"/1847 mm

Basically, if you ignore the four-door, it’s the same size as the model that everyone outside of fleets actually bought.

Now, the fleets are buying Transit Connects, which in LWB cargo form fan take a 87.3" load on the floor, or 116.9" when you fold the front passenger seat down. And the 4'x8' sheet of plywood fits between the wheel wells, not on top of them.

They did sell a lot of them to fleets, but the owners of those fleets didn’t go anywhere. Also, in my neck of the woods lots of individuals bought the basic 2wd single cab of the last version, including me.

The margin isn’t big enough on those low end trucks... I absolutely loved my old standard cab hardbody Nissan and would get another- but they were cheap. Nissan would have to sell a handful of them to make as much as one loaded up crewcab 4x4... Same with the Ranger.

01/14/2018 at 16:15

Kinja'd!!!0

True, but not as in need of it as the Nissan. At least Toyota has made efforts to update the Tacoma.

The V6 in the Frontier is based on a design that dates all the way back to 1994, and the I4 is based on one that dates back to 2000.

The TR family I4, including the one found in the Tacoma, is 4 years newer than the Frontier I4, and the V6, while in a family dating back to 2002, is the only Atkinson cycle engine in it’s class.

Of course, Ford, Chevrolet/GMC, and Honda have them both beat with more modern engines.

maybe for the old Ranger, since most of its tooling and investment was paid off during the Clinton administration.

I’m not joking. I can jump from my 2011 Ranger into a 1995 Ranger, and the interior is exactly the same.
